Early in the 1920’s in Arkansas’s El Dorado Oilfield, a crowd gathered to see if their investments would pay off. People like Dr. Samuel T. Busey were convinced that “there was oil down there somewhere”, but they didn’t have the facts to prove it. Three gassers were producing oil nearby, but they were not producing at commercial quantities. With no evidence, the investors went on anyway by investing in a well that they called the “wildcat”. Some members even put in $1,000. The onlookers watched earnestly as the drilling began to reach over 2,000 feet. Then, something happened. The crowd could hear an intense rumbling and the ground began to shake. To their surprise, oil began to shoot out creating a mushroom cloud producing 15,000,000 to 35,000,000 cubic feet of gas a day.

Today, around one-third of Arkansas’s counties produce natural gas, and with new innovations like hydraulic fracturing, that number is steadily climbing.
