MONTEREY FORMATION

Monterey Formation Mineral Rights

The Monterey Shale was discovered in 1901 in Santa Barbara county in southern California. It covers 1,750 square miles in the San Joaquin Basin, extending offshore into the Santa Barbara Channel and the Santa Maria Basin. It is California’s primary source rock, accounting for most of the state’s known resources. First discoveries were in the Orcutt and Cat Canyon Oil Fields, as well as offshore in the South Ellwood and Point Arguello Fields. It sources major oil fields like Kern River, Elk Hills, and Midway-Sunset Oil Fields. Royalty Clearinghouse is seeking acquisition opportunities in the Monterey Shale.
