NEW MEXICO

Since the 1920’s New Mexico has been a major producer of oil and gas. From 1924 to the early 1960’s, production was at a steady rise but began to decline by the early 70’s. This decline continued until the new drilling innovations of hydraulic fracturing. Fracking resulted in an annual peak for oil production at 147 million barrels of oil in 2015.

Today, New Mexico is the third highest producing state in the nation at an average of 248,000,000 barrels of oil per year.
